Transitional Colonial
Beverly Hills, CA
This young family came to us with a vision: a new residence that would feel timeless from the street but offer the functionality of a modern home. Familiar with our work — we completed the transformation of their sister’s home just down the block — they trusted our studio to bring that vision to life on an established, tree-lined street in Beverly Hills.
Set across three levels and roughly 9,000 square feet, the home balances tradition with the homeowners’ request for open-concept family areas. The brick front façade draws inspiration from classic proportions, with formal living and dining rooms adjacent to the foyer. In the rear the home transitions — both architecturally and materially — to allow for connection between the family room and kitchen where the family spends most of their time. Stucco replaces brick and covered porches and balconies create easy access to the picturesque yard.
The transition between these two architectural expressions was deliberate. By composing the rear elevation as if it were a later addition, we were able to preserve the historic character of the front while creating a more relaxed, open plan where the family gathers, entertains, and connects to the outdoors. The layered materiality reinforces this idea — brick to stucco, closed to open, formal to casual.
A centerpiece of the home is the double-height foyer, where applied moulding and a coffered ceiling set a tone of subtle grandeur. An arched opening beneath the stair draws the eye toward the family room and the backyard beyond. Off the main hall, the study offers a jewel box moment: richly stained, contemporary paneling wraps the walls, concealing cabinetry and a hidden bar. The space can be closed off when privacy is needed, or opened to flow into the rest of the main floor.
Tall wood windows and doors throughout the home, including three curved bay windows, allow natural light to filter through each space. The textured ceilings are other showstoppers, including the vaulted primary bedroom’s stepped ceiling detail.
The basement, designed and constructed in a later phase, continues the narrative. We worked closely with the interior designers to elevate the material palette of the game room with custom Murphy bed, kitchenette, full bath, home theater, and laundry room: rich paneling, graphic stone slabs, fluted cabinetry, and applied moulding establish a space that’s luxurious but inviting for guests of all ages.
Classic at its core, this family residence blends traditional architecture with contemporary spirit — gracefully tuned to the rhythms of everyday life.
