Spanish Colonial Bungalow
Santa Monica, CA
When we first stepped through the door of this charming 1930s Spanish Colonial Revival home we were captivated. As if trapped in time, the house was peppered with sweet details, including narrow balconies, plaster alcoves and a streamlined study. Exuberant talavera tiles trimmed the base of the walls in the living room, surrounded the fireplace and nearly covered the kitchen. While the renovation work required removing these tiles with hazmat care, they were reinstalled them in the kitchen and up the graceful stair.
Bringing this bungalow back to life was a collaborative effort with our clients and designer Kishani Perera. Careful to respect the history of the house while bringing it into this century, we restored woodwork, plaster, windows, flooring and wood ceilings throughout the house. Where new building materials were required, they were purposefully chosen to complement existing materials. Small spaces were opened to each other without losing the original intimacy.
Nevertheless, this house is far from a museum. It is a home rich with history and character, made anew for a growing family making history for themselves.
