Hollywood Regency
Los Angeles, CA
When our clients purchased this property – a Hollywood Regency style residence within Los Angeles’s Hancock Park – they knew the neighborhood and size of the house were just right… but not the authentic 1970s plan. They commissioned our studio to devise a full interior renovation to bring the unchanged time capsule into the 21st Century for their two young boys.
Inside, the interiors were gutted (the bathrooms even had carpet!) and reimagined to address our favorite challenge: retaining as many of the existing design features of the home while integrating modern, innovative details throughout. A powder room and a larger mudroom/laundry were added to better support this active, stylish family. The kitchen, plus new walk-in pantry, was also expanded and opened to the formal living room and secluded dining room.
Throughout the home, modern finishes, fixtures, decorative lighting and paint were selected to fit the homeowners’ specific tastes. Their affinity for moody colors and high contrast gave us the fun assignment to spec unique finishes within a confined palette. For example, walnut veneer shines on the inside of the kitchen cabinetry instead of classic maple. Other highlights include the wood-paneled study, now painted gray; and a contemporary light fixture that contrasts the foyer’s distinct original mouldings.
Outside, a new roof and reimagined entry were approved by the rigorous HPOZ to update the outdated facade while honoring its history. And while overcoming many delays in construction during the pandemic, this bold, transitional family home now sparkles inside and out.
