California Colonial Revival
Atherton, CA
Our homeowners loved the 4,200 sq. ft. Colonial Revival home they purchased, yet they needed more space to accommodate their growing family and busy careers. We doubled this residence in size, keeping the large, tree-enclosed lot as private and green as possible while connecting to expansive new gardens. Indoors and out, the sympathetic addition looks as if it was part of this bucolic street in Atherton, California all along.
The existing garage was pulled down to make room for a new family room and guest suite with a new primary suite above. The beamed family room opens onto the new pool terrace with a pergola and fire pit, cabana (with outdoor shower), outdoor kitchen and dining deck, defining the best of California living. The private guest suite glows with light, restfully surveying the surrounding redwood glade.
A generous laundry and mudroom take care of business with ample custom cabinetry and boldly patterned terracotta tile. Two gallery hallways keep things moving and a new wine room is a seductive, artful destination.
New private living quarters upstairs also took shape: vaulted ceilings, a sunny reading room and a private balcony enhance the new primary suite. A commodious bath amidst calming white and gray marble tile integrates many specific requests, including filtered water at the sinks. Ample his and her closets, an upstairs study with millwork, paneling and fireplace, plus a second laundry room, complete the second floor.
On the opposite side of the house, a new garage was added with a capacious gym below. In the gym, floor-to-ceiling steel and glass doors welcome light into the space from a wide brick-and-stone stair terrace, bringing function and style to this now ~8,420 sq. ft. residence.
The careful integration of thoughtful details, beautiful materials, inviting furnishings, and exuberant landscape complete this impressive, approachable estate. Looking back, it appears that we changed nothing, all while breathing robust new life into the home.
