21st Century Arts & Crafts
Austin, Texas
This family with four children searched mightily for a new house to fit their growing needs. After nothing felt quite right, they chose to stay where they had already planted roots. Together with Parrish Chilcoat of Cameron Design Group, our team set out to create a bright haven, brimming with comfort, creativity, utility and a bit of glam.
Our extensive renovation focused upon rethinking the purpose of rooms and optimizing indoor-outdoor living while honoring the local vernacular. We replaced the existing stone veneer with white brick, and the faux-shake roof was switched to standing seam metal. We added a dormer to the front roof to add second-floor space and reduce the scale of the roof. We designed a new steel porch structure (inspired by a local restaurant) to the rear. We redesigned the pool and a private, spa-like outdoor shower at the primary bedroom.
Inside, we re-thought awkward rooms to prioritize function and style, with intricate millwork throughout. Kitchen and laundry, home studies, stair, closets, home theater (and bookcases!) were inserted into the old footprint. The primary bath was a particular challenge, where the new floating vanities with suspended mirrors and artful stone surround provide a serene retreat. Parrish Chilcoat artfully layered each space with pastel hues, rich textures, metallic glints and bold stone.
Now, this thoughtfully transformed family sanctuary will nurture our growing family and belong in the neighborhood, as have our homeowners, all along.
